5X, UGANDA (Pirate!). Nick, G3RWF, reports, "Someone is currently pirating
my Ugandan call (G3RWF) - he/she/it was on 20m today (August 1st) at about
1215 UTC - also on 40m a few days ago (and also last March fwiw). I hope
to return to Uganda in October, but no dates yet fixed." Nick told OPDX,
"Current plans are for a return to Uganda in mid-October for 8 weeks -
taking in CQWWCW (maybe SSB too if I can find my mic) and the ARRL 10m
contest (if 10m wakes up again properly!)."
9M, SPRATLY ISLANDS (Reminder). Just a reminder that operators John/9M6XRO
and Steve/9M6DXX will be active as 9M4SLL from Pulau Layang Layang, Spratly
Islands (AS-051) this week between August 7-13th. Activity will be on all
bands from 80-10 meters using CW, SSB and RTTY, using two stations with
linear amplifiers to vertical antennas on the edge of the ocean. Spratly
Islands are ranked 29th in the current The DX Magazine ‘100 Most Needed
Countries’ survey (world-wide, mixed modes), up from number 32 last year.
The QSL Manager for 9M4SLL is Tim Beaumont, M0URX. QSL direct with SAE +
2 USDs or 1 new IRC, OQRS (see <http://m0urx.com/oqrs>) or via the RSGB
bureau (all bureau cards MUST be marked "via M0URX"). Logs will be uploaded
to LoTW as soon as possible after the end of the operation (within a few
days), but there will be NO online log during the DXpedition itself. (Note
for users of computer logging programs: The 9M4 prefix is issued to special
event stations that may be anywhere on Malaysian territory; this includes
the DXCC entities of West Malaysia, East Malaysia or, as in this case,
Malaysian islands in the Spratly group.)
CORRECTION DEPARTMENT. In OPDX.1072, under "VK0H, HEARD ISLAND (Update)",
The callsign for Joe Taylor (Nobel physics) was incorrect and should be
K1JT (not N1JT). We have been informed by Bob, KK6EK, that it is now
corrected on the Heard Island Web page.
CQ NEWS. Rich, W2VU, sent out the following press release on August 1st:
"CQ TO REVAMP PUBLICATION SCHEDULE FOR CONTEST RESULTS; MAJOR RESULTS TO
APPEAR FOUR MONTHS EARLIER -- CQ magazine will embark on a major reorgani-
zation of its editorial content in order to publish contest results signif-
icantly sooner, Editor Rich Moseson, W2VU, announced today. On average,
contest results will appear four months sooner than at present. The new
schedule will be phased in over the course of 2013 and will be fully in
place by 2014.
'The phase-in is necessary because of new and old dates overlapping,'
Moseson explained, 'as well as scheduling needs for non-contest articles
including our special focus issues and Dayton new product reports. As a
result, some contest results will be temporarily relocated in 2013 and
some specials will be rearranged as well.'
'In addition, there will be two sets of CQ WPX Contest results published
in 2013 -- the 2012 scores in January (SSB) and February (CW), followed
by the 2013 results in September (SSB) and November (CW). The CQ World
Wide DX Contest results, which currently appear in the August (SSB) and
September (CW) issues, will be published as of 2013 in the April and May
issues, respectively. For one year only (2013), the CQ World Wide VHF
Contest results will be published in CQ VHF magazine, and will return to
CQ as of 2014, appearing in the January issue.'
This schedule change has been made possible by the fact that the vast
majority of contest entrants submit their logs online, as well as advance-
ments in technology for log-checking, earlier log submission deadlines
announced last month and advances in publishing technology.
'For years, both participants and contest directors have been asking us
to publish the results sooner,' Moseson explained, 'and at last, all of
the pieces have fallen into place to make it possible. The new schedule
represents the minimum amount of time needed to not only collect and
process the logs, but to resolve issues with problem logs and take the
necessary steps to assure the ongoing integrity of our contest results.'

CY9, ST. PAUL ISLAND (QRT). The CY9M St. Paul Island DXpedition went QRT
earlier then expected on July 31st, around 1625z due to a forecast of
poor weather conditions and at the request of the skipper. They departed
from St. Paul Island at 1900z. In 4.5 days of operating, the team made
over 33k QSOs. All contacts will be verified via LoTW once they return
home, and for those who want paper QSLs, Tim Beaumont, M0URX, will be
the QSL Manager. The log is now available on ClubLog. The final totals
are as follows: 33219/QSOs and 12715/Unique Calls. Mode breakdown is:
15561/CW, 16143/SSB, 62/PSK, 705/RTTY and 748/PSK63F. Continent breakdown
is: 441/AF, 0/AN, 514/AS, 17438/EU, 13548/NA, 233/OC and 1045/SA.
D6, COMOROS (Reminder/Update). A team of Europeon operators will be active
as D64K from Ngazidja (Grande Comore), Comoros Islands (IOTA AF-007),
between August 8-20th. The current list of operators mentioned are
Salvador C31CT/EA3QS, Sigi/DL7DF, Josep/EA3AKY, Fabrizio/IW3SQY, Paolo/
IV3DSH, Franco/IZ8GCE and Les/SP3DOI. The team has already obtained all
permissions, and the license has been sent to the DXCC Desk. Pilot station
is Stan/KH6CG. Their license covers from 160 to 6 meters, so the guys will
be active on all bands and modes, and they are even considering the possi-
bility of working on 60m and 6m. They will have four stations on the air
using 2x Elecraft K3, 2x Elecraft K2 all with amps, into 2x Spiderbeams,
2 element vertical array (80/40/30) and HF vertical Multi-band. Suggested
frequencies are:
CW 1826, 3506, 7006, 10106, 14026, 18076, 21026, 24896 and 28026 kHz
SSB 1845, 3780, 7060/7150, 14150, 18140, 21270, 24940 and 28470 kHz

between October 2nd and November 8th. Activity will be holiday style,
CW only, and using 100 watts into dipoles strung-up between coconut
trees on the following islands:

AF-018. Operator Raffaele, IH9YMC, will be active from Pantelleria
Island (IIA TP-001, MIA MI-124, WW Loc. JM56XT), African Italy,
during the CQWW DX SSB Contest (October 27-28th) as a Single-Op/

AS-105. Kim (Tia), DS2NMJ, will be active as DS2NMJ/2 from Yonghung
Island between August 12-13th. Activity will be on 15 and 12

(IOSA SH-09, WLOTA 1319) between August 16-22nd. Operators

EU-165. Massimo, I0PNM, will once again be active as IM0/I0PNM from
San Pietro Island (IIA CI-007, MIA MIS-050, WLOTA 2989) between
August 10th and September 3rd. Activity will be mainly 20/15/10

EU-182. (Correction) One of the Russian-Ukrainian team's operator who
was listed a R6LP in OPDX.1072 from their press release is
actually Oleg, RL6LP, and was active as UT/RL6LP from Ankudinov
Island during the IOTA Contest last weekend. QSL via LoTW or

NA-124. Manuel, XE2HUQ, will be active as XF1F from San Francisco
Island sometime in October. Specific dates were not announced.
Activity will probably be on 80/40/20/17/15/12/10 meters using

JW, SVALBARD (Update). Torkel, LA6VJA, will once again be active as
JW6VJA from the JW5E club station in Longyearbyen on Spitsbergen Island

KP2, U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS (On the Birds!). Wyatt, AC0RA, reports that he
made a QSO on August 2nd with Rich, KP2CT, from St. Thomas on FO-29 for
his first satellite contact. For equipment he has a Icom 706 and an
arrow antenna. He is manually tuning for Doppler and still getting the
hang of it. Wyatt states, "He (Rich) is going to only be on the SSB
satellites for now and probably only FO-29 due to the ease of working
semi duplex on mode J vs mode B. Though we might try on VO52 at some point.
He is still picking up on things that make it easier and need to trouble
shoot a few problems we found during our first QSO! He will try to be QRV
on fo29 during the next few week ends and possibly during the week
depending on his free time due to his unpredictable work schedule. He
also asked that people not try to contact him for skeds. If he knows he
can make a certain pass or passes I will try to make an effort to post
to the AMSAT BB."
NCDXF PRESS RELEASE (Dated July 28th): "The Northern California DX
Foundation is the recipient of a 4000 USDs donation from the Northern
California DX Club. This is the largest donation ever received from a
club. More and more DX clubs are donating to NCDXF. NCDXF thoroughly
analyzes the financial needs of planned DXpeditions and helps provide
critical funding to DXpedtions high on the Most Wanted List. Often
without support such DXpeditions would not be possible. Several expensive
DXpeditions in the Top Ten Most Wanted are in the early or mid planning
stages. Contributions from individuals and from clubs to NCDXF will help
make these DXpeditions happen."
NCDXF PRESS RELEASE (Dated August 48th): "The Northern California DX
Foundation is pleased to announce the addition of two new Directors to
fill vacancies created by retiring board members. Tom Berson, ND2T, and
Glenn Rattmann, K6NA, were elected to fill these positions.
Tom Berson, ND2T, became a ham at the age of 11. He has lived and worked
abroad for 7 ½ years. He is a past president and director of the Inter-
national Association for Cryptologic Research, Inc. Professionally, Tom
is an expert in cryptography, computer security, information conflict,
and high-tech business. Tom has been on several high profile DXpeditions
and will be headed to NH8S Swains Island very soon. Tom has lived in Palo
Alto, CA, since 1977.
Glenn Rattmann, K6NA, has been DXing and contesting since age 14. He has
a degree in Marine Geology and has had successful careers in oceanographic
survey work, electronic sales and manufacturing and aerospace. He retired
from Northrop Grumman in 2007. He has participated in many DXpeditions and
is very active in contesting. He has worked all current DX entities and
loves the low bands. He has been very active in the San Diego DX Club.
Glenn lives in Valley Center, CA.

An eleven member Board of Directors oversees all of the Foundation's
business. These Directors and the volunteer advisors who assist them
have held responsible positions in the business or academic worlds. They
all are active DXers. The Foundation does not have a paid staff, and no
Foundation officer, director or advisor receives a salary or compensation
in any form.
In keeping with the original intent of the founders, NCDXF has supported
over 500 DXpeditions, large and small. For the expensive "mega" DX-
peditions, NCDXF is usually the "anchor" sponsor and its grant often makes
the difference in whether the DXpedition goes forward. Since its founding
in 1972, NCDXF has donated in excess of $1 million to worthy DXpeditions.
NCDXF also supports the world-wide NCDXF/IARU Beacon Project and provides
for scholarships for worthy recipients in cooperation with the ARRL
Foundation.
The Northern California DX Foundation relies heavily upon the generosity

celebrate the founding of the Lebanese Army, and to "thank the Lebanese
Army for their effort and their faithfulness to the Land, to the Country,

OJ0, MARKET REEF. Pasi, OH3WS/OG3A, who was active as OH0/OH3WS from

P3, CYPRUS (Update). Mark, M0DXR, will be active as P3F (not 5B/M0DXR
as first announced) during the CQWW DX SSB Contest (October 27-28th) as
a Single-Op/All-Band/High-Power entry. QSL via his home callsign.
PT0, ST. PETER AND ST. PAUL ROCKS (Update). Members of the Araucaria DX
Group, in conjunction with the TX3A Team, will activate St. Peter and
St. Paul Rocks (PY0S), under the callsign PT0S approximately between
November 10-22nd. They suggest on their Web page to please visit and
check their Web site regularly for news updates or announcements. (Like
all things maritime, the exact dates of their travel to the rocks will
be subject to the weather and issues related to the boat.) The Web page
also menitoned that two operators of the PT0S Team (PY2XB and AA7JV)
went out on a survey voyage to St. Peter and St. Paul Rocks this past
weekend to find a suitable site for a platform to hold their operating
and sleeping tent. This is necessary as there is no flat land available
on the rocks. They have only 5 hours on the rocks to complete their survey,
which, in addition to the platform site, will include surveying potential
antenna sites and generator location.
Once again, operators for the PT0S operation will be Fred Carvalho/PY2XB
(PY2XB/PY0F, PQ0F, VP5/PY2XB, 8P9XB), Peter Sprengel/PP5XX/PY5CC (PY0FM,
PW0T, HK0NA). Tomi Pekarik/HA7RY and George Wallner/AA7JV. The operation
will have a strong low band focus. There will be a dedicated 160 meter
station operating on 160 meters from sunset to sunrise. A second station
will be on 80 and 40 meters at night. During the day they will operate
two stations on the higher bands -- and 6 meters -- based on conditions.
RTTY will also be supported. An "Online QSL Request Service" (OQRS) will
be set up on their Web site for both direct or Bureau QSLs. For direct

NEW MANAGER. Buzz, NI5DX, is now serving as QSL Manager for Clive,
3B8CW, on Mauritius Island. Buzz has Clive's past logs and will be
able to confirm contacts made with 3B8CW from September 1, 2011,
onward. Clive is using a Mosley TA-33 antenna at the present time,
but is considering building/buying a HexBeam to improve his signal
and allow operation on the 79-WARC bands. A QSL card is now being
designed and will be printed soon. Please allow for a short delay
in response if sending for a card before they arrive from the printer.
This is generally 4-6 weeks after the order is placed.
OJ0R LoTW. Nigel, G3TXF, reports that the OJ0R log will be uploaded
to LoTW just as soon as the LoTW Cert arrives. He also states that
both Don, G3XTT, and himself had a great time, and they are grateful
to Teemu, SM0W, for setting it all up. Nigel has provided a few photos

Well-known operator Paul Caboche, 3B8AD, became a Silent Key (SK) on
July 25th. Paul is remembered as a communications pioneer and was
active on many islands in the Indian Ocean. He was inactive in recent
years due to illness. Older DXers may remember Paul as VQ8AD, etc.

Jacky, 3B8CF, made the following announcement on the IARU Region 1
Web site, "Paul was the oldest ham in Mauritius. His first call was
VQ8AS in the Chagos back in 1937. Later he got the call VQ8AD, then
in 1970 he became 3B8AD. He was the first chairman of MARS (Mauritius
Amateur Radio Society) and held this post for many years, from 1967
to 1993. He has done much to protect the interests of ham radio in
Mauritius and to promote this hobby over the years. May he rest in
Peace! Jacky, 3B8CF."
OPDX was also informed that Sven Lutzen, OZ3SA/OX3SA, recently had a
heart attack and is now a Silent Key (SK). No other details were
provided.

TZ, MALI. "The Daily DX" reports this past week that Fernando, Z21BB/EA4BB
(ex-9Q5BB, D2BB, ST2BF, TU5JL), has left Zimbabwe and has taken a new
assignment in the Mali Republic. He is expected to receive a TZ6BB license
in a couple of week. QSL via W3HNK.
V5, NAMIBIA. Hans, DF2UU, informs OPDX that he will once again be active
from Namibia between the end of August to the middle of September as
V5/DF2UU. Activity will be on 160-6 meters. He will also be active during
some contests. In the SSB FD, September 1-2nd, he (and others) will be
active as V55V/P as a Multi-Single entry. In the WAE SSB, September 8-9th,
he states that the callsign is not sure, but if he works Single-Op it will
be V5/DF2UU and if it is Multi-Op then V55V.
VU7, LAKSHADWEEP ISLAND (aka Laccadive Islands)[IOTA/Lighthouse/WFF Op].
Members of the Bangalore Amateur Radio Club (VU2ARC) and a small group
of amateur radio volunteers will be active as VU7M from Minicoy Island
(AS-106, WFF VU-103, ARLHS LAK009 and also IND017 [to be deleted!!])
between August 13-22nd. The group received special permission from
Ministry of Communication and Information Technology, and the Government
of India on July 26th, to use the special callsign VU7M to represent
India during the 2012 International/Lighthouse and Lightship Weekend,
August 17-18th. Operators mentioned are Arasu/VU2UR, Laxmanan/VU2LX,
Srikantha/VU2GSM, Govind/VU2GGM, Ramesh/VU2LU and Lion/VU2JHM. Details
on QRZ.com state that they will be "setting up humble HF station" and
the QSL route is "DIRECT or through the Bureau". For more details

YN, NICARAGUA. Jeff, N6GQ, will once again be active as YN2AA from Grenada,
Nicaragua, between October 23-29th. Activity will be on 160-6 meters,
and he will participate in the CQWW DX SSB Contest (October 27-28th) as
a Single-OP/All-Band/High-Power entry. Jeff will probably use a K3 radio
and 1 KW amp into the following antennas: a Tribander, 2 element 40m beam,
wires and beverages for 80/160m. QSL via NN3W, by the Bureau or direct. U.S.
stations, please send SASE; DX stations, please send SAE with GS or IRC.
Bureau service will take time. Logs will also be uploaded to LoTW.
ZL9, CAMPBELL ISLAND (Update). It was announced on August 5th: "The HARAOA
ZL9HR DX’Pedition to Campbell Island in the Great Southern Ocean (IOTA
OC-037) is delighted to have been granted an award from the prestigious
ARRL Colvin foundation.
The Colvin Award is conferred in the form of grants in support of Amateur
Radio projects that promote international goodwill in the field of DX
and the HARAOA are honored to have received this award.
Preparations for this major DX’Pedition are on schedule for the
activation dates of November 28th. to December 9th, 2012."
