‘The SOC CW Bash’ To commemorate the passing of one of its founding members, the Second Class Operators Club will be holding its first ‘SOC CW Bash’ on Saturday April 2nd between 0000z and 2359z. Many people will remember Hank Kohl K8DD (SOC #69) as one of the main engines behind QRP ARCI , a professional CW operator and a seasoned contester so as a fitting tribute, the SOC hopes to combine all aspects of Hank’s talents and passions in one event. Any operator can take part in the ‘Bash’, and although not a contest, the SOC will be issuing its very own special certificates for top scorers in both a QRO and QRP section. The club will hopefully be activating all of its own call signs during various times of the 24 hour period - W0SOC, M0SOC, W1SOC AND W5SOC - and although there are no ‘strict rules’ the format will be roughly as follows: - Time: 0000z to 2359z on Saturday 2nd April (nearest Saturday to April 1st). - Call ‘CQ DD’ in memory of Hank around the QRP calling frequencies: 3560, 7030 (also check 7040), 14060, 21060, 28060. If QRO, please limit power to 100W. - Members to exchange membership number, name and RST. - Non members to exchange name and RST. - Stations worked on different bands will count as separate QSO’s e.g. If you work W0SOC on 80m, 40m and 20m this will count as three points but if you work W0SOC twice on 80m this will only count as one. Please submit your scores to Ryan G5CL at RPike78088@btinternet.com by Saturday 16th April (if you solely use QRP, please note this clearly in your email). [G5CL] ------ G3RAF OPERATIONAL - As from 1st of December 2010 to 31st of March 2011 the G3RAF callsign will be held by Ian M0RGI, authorised by (Michael M0MJG) RAFARS Council. Royal Air Force Amateur Radio Society, G3RAF is the callsign of the RAFARS Council Group. It is operated by Council Members only. It is intended that it will rotate between suitably licenced Council Members and may be used for special event purposes throughout the United Kingdom. [Pete's-DX-Newsdesk] ------ AOTA, AIRFIELDS ON THE AIR WEEKEND 2-3 APRIL 2011 Once again The Royal Air Force Amateur Radio Society will be putting on an AOTA Weekend 2/3 April 2011. All Radio Amateurs Stations World Wide are welcome to take part, and in particular RAFARS Members/ATC/Clubs are asked to take part to put on as many AOTA Stations as possible during this weekend to make it a great success. All that is needed is either a current or an old RAF Military Establishment which was used during the wars or perhaps may still be in current use. The usual AR Licensing Regulations apply. You can either use a SES, GX or /P call-sign and to make it possible for your activation to give out points, you must register with the RAFARS AOTA Manager Vince G4DQP QTHr in qrz.com or email earlval@postmaster.co.uk with details of call-sign to be used, the Location/Airfield, Name and Call-sign of person operating or running the SES. Once you have registered with Vince you will then be able to inform stations worked that you are on the AOTA activations list and points can be claimed from your Station by any Station or SWL for an AOTA Certificate. The operating details are SSB CW on any Band (No Digital modes at present). Certificates are available to all Radio Amateurs/SWL. To obtain a Certificate you must work a minimum of five AOTA Registered stations for a Bronze Certificate and/or 50 AOTA Registered Stations for a Gold Certificate. The Cost of a Certificate is £5 payable to RAFARS and sent to RAFARS Award Manager Andrew M3NDZ QTHr in call books and in qrz.com. Andrew is also the RAFARS QSL Manager and can be contacted via email at andrewhumphriss@tinyworld.co.uk if required. Send Andrew the usual details required from your log Date, Time, Call-sign, Band, QTH,Op Name, Name of Airfield or Military Establishment and do not forget to enclose your address where Certificate are to be returned. If you have any queries or are not sure of regulations then contact Vince G4DQP. AOTA Activations may also be seen on: http://www.qsl.net/g4dqp/Activations.html [Pete's-DX-Newsdesk] *******************************************
