BITS & PIECES -

AXEL TIGERSTEDT, OH5NW SILENT KEY
Written by Martti Laine, OH2BH

Axel had just passed his 80th birthday and was ready for another
Christmas. But it did not happen - time was up for Axel. No more OH5NW.
Axel got his license as early as 1950 and soon turned out to be a leading
OH station on the the air. His 1957 win in the CQWW Phone Contest gave him
the first ever OH World top honors from this Northern soil. With that spirit
Axel set a course for youngsters to follow, and in the Sixties he spelled
out another target to push his multi-multi team to heights never seen
before. They competed locally but suddenly saw their country dominating the
multi-multi world for several years as OH2AM and OH5SM.
It was during those other years that Finland began to stand tall in
contesting. Axel made all DXCC countries and his legendary rhombics were a
treat to see. His house was always open to visiting hams.
Axel also served for fifteen years as President of SRAL - the Finnish
Amateur Radio League - and, at the same time, he was cited as a highly
recognized resource in IARU Region 1. (Note by PB2T: OH5NW was IARU Region 1
Treasurer 1972-1975)
Many hams from far and near have visited Arboretum Mustila which is today
world famous as a unique area of exotic conifer species and introduced
horticultural plants in all of Scandinavia. Axel, OH5NW together with his
brother Peter, OH5NQ have been at the helm of this national treasure which
is worth visiting today. There, nature lives in harmony with huge antenna
towers! You may want to study the life and work of the late Axel, OH5NW on
the Web at www.mustila.com/index2.htm
The folks in OH pause this Christmas to pay tribute to another powerhouse
of Finland, Axel, OH5NW and share these sad moments with the ham family of
Carola, OH5SM and Peter, OH5NQ. Axel's signal has faded away. [IARU Region
