6 METRES & UP -

- METEORS IN MAY -
The most prominent shower this month is n - Aquariids, peaking May 05, 19h
UT.
This shower, related to the rich stream associated with comet 1P/Halley, is
characterized by a broad maximum, sometimes with a variable number of submaxima.
Recent IMO analyses, based on data collected between 1984 and 2001, indicate
that ZHR is generally above 30 hr-1 between about may 3-10. The peak rates
appear to be variable on a roughly 12-years timescale, due to influence of
Jupiter. According to this model, the most recent highest rates should have
happended around 2008-2010. Peak ZHR around 65 hr-1 is predicted for 2012.
Please note that n - Aquariids radiant is above horizon (thus making the shower
usable for MS) in Europe only (approximatively) in very late night and morning
hours. While southern Europe stations will be able to "see" the radiant till
early afternoon, in northern Europe skies the radiant culminates at reletively
low elevation so an observer is able to see the radiant for much less time. Some
daytime showers (? - Cetids, peaking May 20th being the most significant ) will
be also active this month; in addition to increasing Sporadic Meteors
background, they will provide good conditions for MS DXing.
Theoretical peaktimes for May meteorshowers can be found here:

Annual Armed Forces Day Crossband Test Scheduled for May 12

The Army, Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard are
co-sponsoring the annual Military/Amateur Radio Crossband
Communications Test in celebration of the 62nd anniversary of Armed
Forces Day (AFD). Although the actual Armed Forces Day is celebrated
on the third Saturday in May -- May 19 in 2012 -- the AFD
Military/Amateur Crossband Communications Test will be conducted on
May 12 to prevent conflict with the Dayton Hamvention, scheduled for
May 18-20.

The annual celebration features traditional military-to-amateur
crossband communications SSB voice and Morse code tests. These tests
give Amateur Radio operators and short wave listeners an opportunity
to demonstrate their individual technical skills and to receive
recognition from the appropriate military radio station for their
proven expertise. QSL cards will be provided to those stations
making contact with the military stations.

Military-to-amateur crossband operations will take place on the
dates and time in UTC on the frequencies listed for each station.
Voice contacts will include operations in single sideband voice
(SSB). Some stations, depending on propagation and staffing, may not
operate the entire period. Participating military stations will
transmit on selected military MARS frequencies and listen for
Amateur Radio stations in the amateur bands. The military station
operator will announce the specific amateur band frequency being
monitored. Duration of each voice contact should be limited to 1-2
minutes.

The schedules and frequencies of participating military stations can
be found in PDF format on the web at,

New Section Manager Appointed in Virgin Islands

Fred Kleber, K9VV, has been appointed as Section Manager of the
Virgin Islands Section beginning May 1, 2012. Kleber, of
Christainsted, is taking the reins from John Ellis, NP2B, who is
planning to move out of the Section soon. Ellis has been Section
Manager of the Virgin Islands since 1996. Kleber has served as the
Section Emergency Coordinator of the Virgin Islands this past year.

Ellis recommended that Kleber fulfill his current term of office
that continues until September 30, 2012. In response, Dave Patton,
NN1N, Membership and Volunteer Programs Manager, consulted with ARRL
Southeastern Division Director Greg Sarratt, W4OZK, and made the
appointment effective on May 1.

Nomination petitions are now being accepted at ARRL Headquarters for
any qualified ARRL member who would like to run for the next term of
office as the Virgin Islands Section Manger. See the notice in the
April 2012 (page 80) or May 2012 (page 76) issues of QST for details
on how to nominate someone for this post. [ARRL]
