DXCC: ZK2; square AH51; 2012-07-09 6m (&2m) EME DXpedition to ZK2 September 7-21, 2012 Well, I wanted to provide as much advance time as I could so you could mark your calendars and/or get everything in your 6m station optimized by the end of August As those of you know who completed JT65A mode contacts with me on 6m EME when I was in E51, 3D2 and 5W, I will do my best to set up and be active during our common moon windows - especially during the optimum days of the month for 6m EME. The callsign is not in hand yet (but assured by email), and the QTH has not been finalized, but all the plane tickets have been purchased (as usual, any contributions are VERY welcome), and the equipment (a KX3 portable transceiver with compatible 6m amplifier) is in the works. As soon as the license is in hand, the information will also be available under the callsign on QRZ.com. In the meantime, preliminary information about the DXpedition is here: http://www.bigskyspaces.com/w7gj/Niue2012.htm I don't know if it will be possible to find a QTH that provides my usual preference for a takeoff shot over water on moonrise. However, that is not necessary to work NA stations during their moonsets (I will be elevating), so we will get the ground gain on YOUR end for that And if a QTH with a good moonrise shot (for EU moonset) cannot be found, it is quite likely that we will instead wind up with a good moonset over the water for the EU moonrise. Currently, ZL1RS is planning to activate ZK2 on 2m EME during the same time period, as we did together from E51 and 3D2; Bob's call will probably be his old callsign of ZK2RS. More details will be posted on the above website as the departure time at the end of August gets closer. I am very much looking forward to giving you a new one on the Magic Band! GL and DX! VY 73, Lance. [MMMonVHF]

GI, NORTHERN IRELAND Additional Titanic Centenery Information: Two special specials will be active from Belfast for the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the RMS Titanic. GI100MGY will be active from The City Hall, Belfast 7-10th of April as part of the councils Titanic 2012 festival. We'll actually be setting up station in the council chambers. GI2012MGY will then run from 12-18th from onboard the SS Nomadic, the last surviving link to the Titanic and the White Star line: www.nomadicpreservationsociety.co.uk/index.asp We'll be operating mere yards from where the Titanic and indeed the Nomadic where built AND where MTV will be staging their Titanic Sounds concert on the 13th. The two callsigns are "firsts" for the UK being the first time a regional designator has been allowed to be used as a special event callsign, we expect interest to be huge. GI100MGY will of necessity be a 100w station while GI2010MGY will run the legal limit. We'll be QRV on all bands 80 - 10m using CW and SSB, it is unlikely we'll do any digital modes as operating time is short and we want to give as many as possible a chance to work us. See QRZ.com for details [Pete at the DX-Newsdesk] ------------------------------ PY, BRAZIL The special callsign ZY2014WC marks the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2014 in Brazil. The FIFA World Cup 2014 will be held in the cities of Manaus, Porto Alegre, Curitiba, Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte, Brasilia, Cuiaba Salvador, Recife, Natal and Fortaleza, Brazil. QSL via PS7KC, direct or Bureau. No e-QSL! ------------------------------ *RAC Bulletin 2012-021E - Update on 60 Metres* 2012-04-04
RAC has been pursuing channelized access to 60M since early 2010. Our request was for an allocation identical to the US allocation, with one additional unique Canadian channel, and with fewer restrictions (the US allocations were restricted to USB voice only, with power and antenna restrictions). Amateurs will recall that one of the rationales for RAC requesting a 60M allocation was to enhance emergency communications including cross-border interoperability. IC responded by indicating that they were prepared to support access in synch with US amateur allocation and regulations. In late 2011, in response to an ARRL petition for change, the FCC issued a final Report and Order that, once it has been published in the Federal Register, will result in a change to the frequency of one of the channels and will enable the use of CW and data modes in addition to USB voice. These features had already been in the original RAC request. The FCC Report and Order has cleared the way for Canada to move ahead with finalizing its allocation to match the new US allocations, including the ability to use CW and data modes. This allocation, which will be on a secondary basis, requires a public consultation through the Canada Gazette, which RAC anticipates will occur in the second quarter of 2012.
It is important that Canadian Amateurs comment on the draft once released. RAC will continue to keep our members aware of the status of this important initiative.
An important offer has been made by IC with regards to 60M. Industry Canada is prepared to licence operators in channelized 60M operation pending the results of the consultation process. The licencing process will be managed out of ICs regional offices and is open to any Canadian amateur. The process requires a formal licence application, payment of a licence fee, and the use of a special call sign instead of the licensee's amateur call sign. RAC regards this as an important interim step allowing amateurs to get on the air in the 60M band as soon as possible and thanks IC for this initiative. RAC`s objective, however, is to ensure that Canadian amateurs have the 60M allocation available to all amateurs as part of their amateur radio certification, i.e. without licence applications, licence fees or special call signs. RAC is cautiously optimistic that this will come about in the summer of 2012.
If you wish to obtain a temporary, paid license to operate on 60M, please contact your local Industry Canada Regional Office to complete the application form. The total fee depends upon the date of your application but in any case is less than $100.
