21/05/2012: Andre, GM3VLB, reports "In the hope of completing what I now call the "SCOTIA challenge", which in my own case means activating the last five of the programme's 200 islands which I haven't yet activated, I am returning to the Orkney (EU-009) group, beginning 21 May, 2012. I have a return booking on 7 June but am prepared to remain in EU-009 longer, if necessary. The 5 remaining islands are Muckle Green Holm (IOSA OR32, SCOTIA OI20), Linga Holm (IOSA OR31, SCOTIA OI21), Eynhallow (IOSA OR24, SCOTIA OI24), Faray (IOSA OR23, SCOTIA OI28) and Calf of Eday (IOSA OR29, SCOTIA OI29). Some are quite difficult to approach and to land on (steep rocky shores) as well as being subject to very strong tidal current (the waters off Eday are in fact the chosen location for testing the latest tidal generators, so near-perfect weather conditions will be required. I believe most may be first-time activations. This will be a solo operation (XYL Veronica having decided discretion was the better part of valour!). If successful, I hope to continue activating islands, this season, in a more relaxed way, hopefully teaming up with regular island buddy Alex G(M)0DHZ to re-activate some less remote islands, which even some of the high-scoring SCOTIA chasers may have missed - I will be doing an analysis of the records to determine the most wanted." KH8/KL7RRC - AMERICAN SAMOA Yuri, N3QQ and Dick, N7RO plan to be active from Pago Pago, Tutuila island (OC-045, USi AS007S, WLOTA 4385), either end of May or beginning June 2012 as KH8/KL7RRC for one week. They will be QRV on 10-40m, but the main purpose of trip is business related (installing 2-way systems.) When in Pago Pago, they will be meeting FWS officials and boat owners discussing the possibility of activating the very rare Rose Atoll (OC-190, USi AS004S) with a view to being QRV from there in December / January. If interested in joining the proposed Rose Atoll expedition, contact Yuri N3QQ. QSL via N7RO. *Reminder that KL7RRC also hopes to be active from IOTA NA-240 NEW in May 2012.
YV - PATOS ISLAND - CALLSIGN CHANGE A team from the Caracas DX Group will be active as YW5PI from the rare Patos Island (SA-048, DIV-068, WLOTA 0499, WW Loc. FK90BP) between 19-22 April, 2012. This is only the second expedition to take place from Patos, due to its remoteness and difficult access. The first DXpedition was made by the CDXG 21 years ago, making it the most requested and sought after IOTA in Venezuela. The team will operate on all HF bands and modes. QSL via DM4TI.
