25/03/2011: Members of the Safari DX Activators club will be QRV as 4J0SFR
and 4J0LH from the Absheron (ARLHS AZE-006), Shuvalan (AZE-007) and Amburan
(AZE-008) lighthouses from 25-27 March 2011, in celebration of their 150th
anniversaries. Activity will be on all HF bands using CW and SSB. QSL via

25/03/2011: Eri, JF1VGZ (an 11 year old YL) and Masa, JA1MFR will be active
as KH0/KH7ERI and KH0/WN1Y, respectively, from Himawari, Saipan Island (IOTA

25/03/2011: Jakob, OZ7AEI, plans to activate the Strib lighthouse (ARLHS
DEN-047, WLOTA 2690, Admiralty C0922, WW Loc. JO45VN), located on the island
of Fyn (IOTA EU-172, DIA FY-001), on 25 March 2011. The activity will only
be about one hour and he hopes to start around 9:30 UTC. QRV on 20m SSB

25/03/2011: Operators Norbert F6AXX, Romain F8DSI and Bernard F5HEW are
currently active as S79UFT from the island of Mahe (WLOTA 3286), Seychelles
inner islands (IOTA AF-024) until the 15th April 2011. QRV on 80-10m using
CW and a little PSK. Suggested frequencies - CW: 3524, 7013, 10115, 14025,

28/03/2011: Four Dutch radio amateurs will be active from Freetown (Grid
Loc. IJ38), Sierra Leone, between 28th March and 18th April 2011. Arie PA3A,
Arie PA3AN, Ad PA8AD and Bas PD0CAV plan to operate, hopefully as 9L5MS, on
160-10 metre CW, SSB and RTTY, using three stations with amplifers and
several beam and vertical antennas. The team will provide support and raise

on 80-10 metres with three stations on the HF bands and one dedicated

SPECIAL EVENTS -
25/03/2011: Special event station 8J2OIDEN is currently active until 31
March 2011 to celebrate the 60th Anniversary of Toyota-city, Chubu region,
Aichi prefecture [Aichi-ken], island of Honshu (IOTA AS-007, WLOTA 2376),
Japan. ("Oiden" comes from "Toyota Oiden Matsuri (or Festival)," and
originally means "Come on!"). The town of Koromo, the predecessor of present
day Toyota, was a major producer of silk and prospered in the Mikawa region
from the Meiji Era through the Taisho period. The town gained the status of
a city on March 1, 1951. The town changed its name to Toyota in 1959, and
one year later, became the sister city of another automotive city, Detroit,
Michigan. Toyota-shi is also twinned with the County of Derbyshire, England,

25/03/2011: Special event station 8J400MK is now QRV until 4 December 2011
to celebrate the 400th Anniversary of Matsue Kaifu (or Construction of
Matsue Castle and Castle Town). Matsue Castle (WCA JA-00103) is a feudal
castle in Matsue-city, located in Chugoku region, Shimane prefecture
[Shimane-ken], island of Honshu (IOTA AS-007, WLOTA 2376), Japan. Nicknamed
the "black castle" or "plover castle", it is one of the few remaining
medieval castles in Japan - at least of the few remaining in their original
wooden form, and not a modern reconstruction in concrete. The construction
of Matsue Castle began in 1607 and finished in 1611. QSL via the JARL

and satellites expedition between 28 March and 1 April 2011. Activity will

BITS & PIECES -
Want to go on a DXpedition?
Chris, VK3QB, reports that the members of the 'Oceania Amateur Radio DX
Group' (ODXG) are planning to go to Vanuatu again, but this time look for
operators to join the fun and some sightseeing.
Plans are to arrive in Port Vila on September 28th, to get set up. Then
operate the 2 contest weekends, with relaxed DXpedition operations between
October 3-7th - another 2-3 days of relaxed operations following the CW
Contest, then leave Vanuatu on October 14th.
Plans are still developing and depending on interest, ODXG will run
multiple stations from two separate locations on the island of Efate (Port
Vila) which is just a 4 hour flight from Melbourne.
Any interested people should register with Chris, VK3QB. Please provide a
brief overview of your interests, any relevant or special skills (many
skills contribute to a successful DXpedition) that may be useful for the
trip.

Thormod (Tom) Bøe LA7OF - SK
Thormod (Tom) Bøe LA7OF, former head of the European Radiocommunications
Office, passed away on March 21, 2011 at the age of 71.
At the time of his death Tom was president of the Norwegian Radio Relay
League (NRRL).
The Amateur Radio community is shattered by the sad news. In this time of
bereavement the International Amateur Radio Union Region 1 President,
Executive committee and member societies, convey their heartfelt condolences
and sympathy to NRRL, his family, friends and to all those who admired him
as they mourn his loss. Tom is survived by his XYL Brit. May his soul rest
in peace.
