NA-231. (Update/NEW RARE IOTA). As mentioned in OPDX.933, Cezar, VE3LYC, will attempt to activate East Pen Island, Nunavut, for three days during the period between March 26-31st. It was announced this past week that the Industry Canada issued
him the callsign VY0V to be used during this operation. East Pen Island is located in CQ Zone 4. Cezar would like to remind everyone that an earlier try he undertook with Ken/G3OCA in July 2007 was unsuccessful. The outcome of this new attempt will be determined by local conditions, weather and safety factors. Details from QRZ.com states: "For this trip Cezar has retained the services of two local guides. All the camping
gear will be loaded on sleds towed by snowmobiles. Under good weather conditions, the travel to the island should take around 10 hours. Radio equipment will be carefully packed to minimize the severe beating it will take during transportation. Since the sled has no struts, the uneven ground surface will make it jump up to 30/40 cm and land hardly. Inside the tent, con- densation will have to be eliminated before switching on the rig. Weather conditions are of concern. Outside temperature is expected to be at the time -20C or lower. The team could leave for the island in good weather, but the situation can change very rapidly up North. In less than an hour a blizzard could make the travel impossible. Out there they will have to put up the tent and wait for a change in weather before
continuing their journey. This is a rather difficult project, and although Cezar is fully committed to it, he wants to convey to everyone that it may have to be aborted if safety
concerns dictate it." At this time Cezar is looking for group and individual donors who understand and appreciate the nature of this difficult project and are willing to join in the
effort. Support for this project is welcome via PayPal at:

Members of the "Buddies in the Caribbean" DX- pedition group which specializes in 100 watt or less low power radios and the Buddipole portable antenna system is off again to a new DXpedition site on February 2-11th, 2010. This is an annual effort to demonstrate "ultra-lite" DXpeditioning into magnificent "vista" locations, operate a field portable battery-only radio with backpackable, lightweight antennas and most of all "have fun!" The nine operators from eight states mentioned are: Budd/W3FF, Chris/W6HFP, Scott/NE1RD, Dan/WZ1P, Steve/WG0AT, Mike/ KC4VG, Guy/N7UN, Paul/KB9AVO and Wey/K8EAB. The team negotiated with the amateur license regulatory process through the St. Lucia Telecom to receive their J6/homecall licenses in six weeks. In early February they intend to have 3 villa stations in operation on 160-15 meters and some
occasional operations on 10m and 6m, propagation permitting, using CW, SSB, and the Digital modes. At the same time, several teams will be battery-only field portable either at St. Lucia beaches or mountain tops. QSL via LoTW, eQSL, or mail to operator's home callsign (SASE required).

YASME EXCELLENCE AWARDS. "On January 8, 2008, The Directors of The Yasme Foundation announced the establishment of the Yasme Excellence Awards. The Directors stated that these awards would be given from time to time as the board feels appropriate. These awards are given for service and dedication to amateur radio as recognized by the foundation's Directors. Awards were later announced for the year 2007. No awards were given for 2008. The Yasme Foundation Board of Directors is now pleased to announce
the latest winners of the Yasme Excellence Awards. The Awards for 2009 have been given to the following amateurs --

Jamie Dupree/NS3T – For his creation of the Radiosport Web site (http://www.radio-sport.net/). This takes contest reporting into a new genre - the sports reporter.
Jamie also created the Radio-Sport.Net World Rankings database that has been used by many contesters around the world. Radiosport.net is an important new forum for Amateur Radio operation.

Bob Bruninga/WB4APR – For the invention of APRS and the continuing enhancement of its capabilities. Recently, Bob has expanded the messaging ability of the system to allow sending information in support of emcomm and other activities. Since APRS doesn’t require the complexity of other systems such as Winlink, APRS is a valuable addition to the amateur's tool kit. Bob is a tireless, personal promoter and publicizer of amateur radio.

George Wallner/AA7JV and Tomi Pekarik/HA7RY (award divided equally) – In 2009, George and Tomi completed DXpeditions to Mellish Reef, VK9GMW and the Chesterfield Islands, TX3A. These expeditions represent a somewhat unique and refreshing approach to DXpeditioning. They show that a small group can exchange time for equipment and mega-funds and come out ahead. By focusing on fewer bands for a longer period, they have been able to log more unique calls from smaller stations. This brings more operators into the HF DX environment and encourages other expeditions to adopt these useful tactics.

Don Hill/AA5AU - Don has been a leader in RTTY contesting for many years. His persistent efforts have finally borne fruit as in recent years, RTTY/Digital contesting has grown at the fastest rate of any contest activity. His Web page (http://aa5au.com/rtty.html)
is the first stop for all RTTY contesters, and he is well-known as the "RTTY Elmer" in digital contest- ing circles.

Tursoon-Zadeh/EY8MM - Nodir has been a beacon from Central Asia on Topband as well as 6-Meters. Not only technically and operationally skilled, Nodir has worked to establish a QSL Bureau for Tajikistan and is the Vice President of the Amateur Radio Society of
Tajikistan.

Rich Strand/KL7RA - Rich was the driving force behind the highly successful W1AW/KL7 and KL5O operations, both of which highlighted a resurgence in Alaskan contesting and DX activity over the past couple of years. Rich works hard to promote operating standards and educate the new contest and DX operators about good operating practices. This is resulting in more Alaskan HF operation which also encourages beginning DXers elsewhere in North America.

For additional information about the Yasme Foundation, visit our Web site at www.yasme.org. On behalf of The Yasme Foundation, congratulations to the 2009 winners!"....

Wayne A. Mills, N7NG, President The Yasme Foundation Directors -- K3ZO, N7NG, N0AX, OH2BH, W6BSY, W6OAT, W6RGG, W6SZN YN2, NICARAGUA. Lee, ZL2AL, informs OPDX and its readers that a Web site is not yet available, but it will come in time. He adds that the award just started last year and
the first three to receive the award were:
#1 Roy Jackson/ZL4BO (SK a few months ago)
#2 Ron Wright/ZL1AMO
#3 Jock White/ZL2GX (SK)
Lee states, "This was the second year...... We are presenting plaques
like the CQ Hall of Fame to the living inductees and just a letter of
commendation to the SKs."
